What are your eyes telling other people?

When we meet someone new or reconnect with an old friend, we subconsciously gather information about that person by his or her appearance. Some of this information, a person can control — putting on a stylish outfit, applying makeup, trying a new hairstyle, etc. However, some things are less controllable due to the natural aging process. Wrinkles, loose skin and bags under the eyes could all be making you look older, sad or tired even though this might not match how you feel inside. One of the first places we look is at a person’s eyes.

Why our eyes appear tired

Hearing someone exclaim “Wow, you look exhausted!” or “What’s wrong?” when you feel totally fine could feel like a punch in the gut. You feel happy and well-rested after a good night’s sleep, you’ve even had your coffee that morning so being asked otherwise could take a toll on your self-confidence. This is actually a fairly common occurrence for both men and women as we age and struggle with aging around the eyes.

Over time, our bodies stop producing as much collagen as before — the very substance responsible for having tight and youthful skin. You may have expected to get a few wrinkles due to this limited collagen production, but are surprised to find the effect it has on your eyes. Loose skin on the upper eyelid could result in a drowsy or upset appearance, and perhaps even impacts your vision. Puffy bags beneath the eyes could add years to your face or make you look as though you spent a sleepless night. You know that you feel just as alert and ready to take on the day as you did in your 20s, but your eyes could be telling a different story.

How eyelid surgery can help refresh your look

If you are bothered by these frustrating signs of aging on your eyelids, eyelid surgery may be an excellent option to restore your youthful look. Our Midsota plastic surgeons offer both upper and lower eyelid surgery (also referred to as blepharoplasty) to help meet the aesthetic goals of our Minnesota clients.

Depending on your appearance, one or both of these procedures may be recommended to refresh your look. Upper eyelid surgery helps remove that excess skin on the upper eyelid to help with a more alert appearance and improve vision for several of our clients. Lower eyelid surgery helps to correct puffy bags under the eyes by removing excess skin and fat.

Rejuvenation in a matter of weeks

Initially after your procedure, your eyes may be swollen from the surgery. However, over the next several weeks, you will begin to truly see the youthful results of your eyelid surgery. Without the excess skin on your upper eyelid and the bagginess of the lower eyelid, your eyes will be telling a different story. They will start to tell others that you are alert, youthful and refreshed.
