The statistics are in! The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) recently released their yearly statistics for 2016. Showing the growing popularity of cosmetic procedures, altogether, over 17 million men and women underwent surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures to enhance their appearance.
What stands out to our team at Midsota Plastic Surgery is the growing popularity of non-surgical enhancement. Of the 17 million procedures that board certified plastic surgeons performed last year, more than 15 million of were minimally and non-invasive treatments. It would seem that more than ever, patients are seeking out ways to rejuvenate their appearance without having to go “under the knife”.
Injectable Treatments Continue to Reign
Long been a favorite of both men and women, injectable treatments reign king and queen—taking not only the first spot, but also the second. With nearly 7.1 million procedures, Botulinum Toxin Type A injectables like Botox® are by far the most commonly performed form of cosmetic enhancement. While only seeing a four percent increase in the past year, Botox’s continued popularity is clearly reflected, showing a 797 percent increase since the year 2000.
Soft tissue fillers followed in second with over 2.6 million procedures—an increase of 298 percent in the last fifteen years. Juvéderm® and Radiesse® are two of Midsota’s most popular fillers.
Beautiful Skin for All
Proving the importance of a healthy and radiant complexion—skin-centric procedures rounded out the top five. Just rounding out the top five is microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion gently rejuvenates tired, dull, and aging skin with a focus on ridding dead skin cells through exfoliation.
Laser Treatments Shine Bright
Laser treatments are at the height of their game. Laser skin resurfacing has seen a booming 243 percent increase since the year 2000. We’re not surprised—lasers are wonderfully effective for renewing skin cells as well as ridding obvious signs of aging including discoloration and pigmentation. Another favorite at Midsota comes in fourth—laser hair removal continues to increase in popularity and has seen a 16-year increase of 51 percent.
While we cannot predict the future, we can say with some certainty that non-surgical rejuvenation is here to stay.
